Arts & Crafts

I was commissioned by West-London Interior Designer, Brooke Copp-Barton to produce this simple yet stunning Arts & Crafts solid oak double bathroom vanity unit. SIze circa 130cm/52inchces wide)

Although the original piece of furniture was in quite good condition, it was still fully stripped of its original finish. The inside needed quite a lot of TLC to tidy it up and there was a split in the join on the countertop which had to be repaired also.

After stripping and the repairs, two thin strips of solid oak were added to the back sides so that the unit would sit flush against the wall with no pipe work showing. Next, the basin holes were cut.

To finish, the wooden top and decorative upstand were treated with a specialist wood protection product to protect from water. This product is also used to treat the wood in saunas. Next, a new stain was applied, the brief was to make it as near to the original colour as possible. Finally two-three coats of oil-wax was applied.

Lastly, the original hardware was cleaned, polished and refitted.

Basalt

Painted in a very dark, inky blue, we have another fabulous 100-year-old solid two-door, two-drawer sideboard converted into a sensational double vanity unit with two semi-inset oval basins. Brushed gold taps and hardware complete the look along with a pure white quartz countertop.

Violetta

A beautifully colourful and eclectic double bathroom vanity unit handcrafted from a reproduction serpentine mahogany and veneered sideboard. Size 171cm/67.5inches wide.

Painted in a beautiful violet/grey tone which we decided on to complement the colourful Bert & May tiles in the shower enclosure on the opposite wall. Bright and beautiful basins on top of a simple white quartz countertop finishes the look.

Laurie

Storage galore! Painted in our specialist cabinetry paint colour matched to Annie Sloan’s Antoinette Pink, this compact breakfront unit really is a centre piece. Its two-toned drawers, adapted to Laura’s specifications (for make-up and brushes) coupled with the ample storage in the cupboards truly met the brief.

In order to give it that slightly older vintage feel, and make it the perfect height, I also changed out the feet.

Crowned with a pure white quartz countertop cut to the same shape as the furniture and with a backsplash neatly houses the beautiful black and white hand-painted semi-inset basin. The porcelain and chrome tap matches nicely with the knobs chosen which are pewter and porcelain.

Verditer

A small edwardian pot cupboard-turned-bathroom vanity unit. With pewter hardware, white quartz top and a traditional style chrome pillar tap.

Eve

This was an exceptionally interesting project. My client, Maxine, was creating a themed guest bathroom in her East London home. The theme was ‘Adam & Eve’ and she was looking for a piece that would be the main focal point and tie in with the other finishes such as wallpaper, tile and flooring, that had already been selected.

After some hunting around, we decided to go for this curvaceous vintage french bombe chest of drawers, converting the top drawer to allow room for plumbing. The countertop - designed perfectly to sit within an alcove, was crafted from 3 billion-year-old Brazilian granite which has beautiful streaks of gold and amber running through the black.

To crown this stunning piece, we sourced a double-walled solid brass countertop basin with a distinctive pattern around the outside (it reminded me of snake skin and complimented the green wallpaper very well indeed. The final touch was the antique solid brass griffin head tap that I had acquired a month before ever speaking with Maxine. It needed to be refinished and also shortened by my brassware restorer, but it suited this project perfectly. It must have been fate!

Bluebelle

100-year-old solid oak sideboard/buffet sympathetically restored and repurposed into a stunning double-basin vanity unit. Size 155cm/61inches wide)

Spanish Beauty

A huge, 250cm (100 inches wide) Spanish solid oak carved sideboard weighing 100kg.

Key points:

  • Reduced the height by trimming down feet

  • Two, drop-in style basin holes created

  • Countertop edging applied to allow the top to be tiled in Porcelanosa solid aluminium gold arrow mosaic tiles with no edges visible.

  • Original hardware cleaned and brushed to match the brushed gold tiled top.

  • Professionally primed, sealed, undercoated and spray painted inside and out.

What a fantastic find and beautifully renovated. THANK YOU.

Blue Dragon

A sweet Queen-Anne style medium-sized vanity unit painted in one of my all-time favourite colours - Little Green’s ‘Thai Sapphire’ chosen especially to match up to the rim of the fantastically bright basin.

The brightness of the basin works well against the more muted grey/stone tones of the weathered wood-effect porcelain tiles. The interior has also been carefully hand-painted to match the tiles on top. Antique brass cup handles (treated to more closely match the colour of the tap) and a solid brass dragon tap complete the piece.

I purchased one of the bathroom cabinets, the magnificent ‘Blue Dragon’ and I must admit It was so beautiful that I decided to design my bathroom especially for it, not other way round. Really stunning piece of work
